Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf du Pape 2016
|Region||France, Rhone, Chateauneuf-du-Pape|
|Brand||Domaine du Vieux Lazaret|
Ripe and forward in feel, featuring crushed raspberry and blackberry compote notes, mixed with red licorice, blood orange, rooibos tea and fruitcake hints. Silky from start to finish, with a subtle sanguine thread lacing up the finish. Very enticing. Best from 2020 through 2037. 16,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. — JM
Black-plum and mulberry notes are plump and easy on the palate of this velvety, plush red. Ripe and rich, it's elegantly balanced by crisp acidity and fine, firm tannins. Primary and fruity now, with delicate hints of nut and spice, it should develop earth and spice tones through 2025.
The earthy, peppery 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine du Vieux Lazaret also doles out plenty of ripe cherry fruit. It's a tradition-leaning blend of 67% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 6% other permitted varieties. Full-bodied and softly dusty, it's an easygoing wine that's approachable now but should last for a decade.
